Not sure what weight loss product to buy? With the number of weight loss pill promising rapid weight loss in just a matter of weeks, it can be really confusing and overwhelming. What’s worse is that not all weight loss products have the same effect – one may work for you but not for others.

Acai berry. Resveratrol. Caffeine. These names where once so popular for the past two years when it comes to weight loss. Weight loss products come and go and for this year 2013, here is the new list of weight loss ingredients that are creating buzz in the weight loss market.

Raspberry Ketone

What is It

Rheosmin, more popularly known as raspberry ketone, is a naturally occurring phenolic compound responsible for the aromatic smell of raspberries. Raspberry Ketone is only found in a number of fruits including raspberries, blackberries, peaches, grapes and apples.

How It Works

One of the most fascinating discoveries on raspberries is its benefits to management of Type 2 Diabetes and obesity. In terms of weight management, there are two raspberry compounds that garnered interest among the researchers – the ketone ‘rheosmin’ and ‘tiliroside’- another type of flavonoid.

Rheosmin has been found to boost metabolism in the fat cells by promoting oxygen consumption, enzyme activity and heat production on certain fat cells. Thanks to its fat-metabolizing effect, you will be less likely to store fat cells and may even use up stored fats. Because of this improvement in the fat metabolism, it can reduce free radicals produced from the fat cells, and thereby, reducing the inflammatory effects accompanied by obesity. Another fat-burning effect of rheosmin is that it can block the production of pancreatic lipase, which is responsible for the breakdown of fats.

Is It Safe?

Since 1965, the US Food and Drug Administration has marked raspberry ketone on Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status.

Green Coffee Bean

What is It

Green coffee bean is the same coffee bean used in common coffee albeit not roasted. It is believed that the roasting process affect the amount of chlorogenic acid. But what is chlorogenic acid?

How It Works

According to a study on chlorogenic acid, it has been proven to improve body weight by speeding fat metabolism and blocking other body hormones contributing to obesity. Chlorogenic acid appeared to be more potent when it comes to regulating lipid metabolism and weight reduction than caffeine.

Chlorogenic acid is also believed to have positive effects on diabetes by improving glucose tolerance and heart disease.

Is It Safe?

Green coffee beans appear to be safe, with no reported serious side effects based on clinical research. But it is important to take note that green coffee still contains caffeine and therefore, may cause caffeine-related side effects such as palpitations and nervousness.

Garcinia

What is It

Brindleberry, more popularly known these days as Garcinia cambogia, is a yellow fruit that grows in many parts of Southeast Asia, Central Africa and India. Garcinia is a popular Ayurvedic herb, and is often dried and cured for storage. The weight-reducing property of Garcinia lies in its rich Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA).

How It Works

In Indian ayurvedic medicine, Garcinia is used to treat edema, constipation, irregular menstruation, intestinal parasites and rheumatism. The action of Garcinia for weight loss has not been established yet but the active compound is believed to have several actions that contribute to weight loss including appetite suppression, increase of fat oxidation or thermogenesis and fatty acid inhibition.

Is It Safe

Garcinia is reported to be safe for people after 12 weeks of use. However, long-term safety is still unknown.
